Hiking

Welcome to my hiking page! I'm excited to share some video clips and photos from my favorite hikes in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, the Grand Canyon and other hikes around Arizona.

The picture at the left I call "Mountains in the Sky." I have hiked many snow fields, but have never hiked in the clouds!

This section is a compilation of lessons learned and interesting things discovered on the trail. I hope you enjoy them!

Snake Lizard (video)

This little guy has tiny legs, but doesn't use them very much. He looks like a lizard but moves like a snake.

One Step at a Time (pdf)

This is a lesson that we learn on the trail, but it can be used at home too!
Prescott Hiking Trails
Prescott, Arizona has many wonderful hiking trails. I hope to document 20 - 30 of my favorites. So, if you are planning a trip to Prescott maybe you can find a nice day hike to take while you are here. I certainly won't document them all but will post my favorites from Thumb Butte, White Spar, Granite Basin, White Rock, Groom Creek, Lynx Lake and more!

Thumb Butte
Thumb Butte Trailhead: 316-317-315-386 Loop (video) This is a very popular loop hike out of the Thumb Butte picnic area. Easy hike with lots of great views! There is a $5 parking fee unless you have a season pass or a Senior Pass. Wednesdays are free parking.
Thumb Butte Trailhead: 316-318-332-367-326 Loop (video) Excellent easy/moderate loop hike! About 2 3/4 miles with some elevation gain. There is a $5 parking fee unless you have a season pass or a Senior Pass. Wednesdays are free parking.
Thumb Butte Trailhead: 316-317 Pine Lakes Loop (video) Beautiful easy/moderate loop hike! About 3.3 miles with some elevation gain. There is a $5 parking fee unless you have a season pass or a Senior Pass. Wednesdays are free parking.

Groom Creek
Groom Creek Cabin out and Back on Trail #307 (video) If you want to visit a beautiful old miner's shack this is a great hike! It is an easy 1-mile hike out and back hike just off the Groom Creek Loop trail #307. Go down Senator Highway to Mile Marker #8 and take Forest Road 78 for .4 miles to the point where it crosses Trail #307. The part on FR78 is pretty rough, so if you don't have a high clearance vehicle it's best to just hike from senator Highway.
Groom Creek Inner Loop: Trail #383 (video) This is a pretty loop hike that goes around the Groom Creek Horse Camp. About 2.5 miles of easy/moderate hiking in a beautiful pine forest. Free parking at the trailhead.

Lynx Lake
Lynx Lake Shoreline Trail #311 (video) This is a lovely hike around Lynx Lake. Easy 2 1/2 mile hike with excellent views of the lake from every point on the trail! The entire west side is wheelchair accessible. There is a $5 parking fee unless you have a season pass or a Senior Pass. Wednesdays are free parking.
Salida Gulch Trail #95 This is a beautiful trail of moderate difficulty with some interesting pictographs along the way.

Granite Basin
Granite Basin Cayuse Trailhead: 349-350-351 Loop (video) This is an excellent little day hike in the Granite Basin Recreation Area. Easy hike with very little elevation gain. The section on trail 350 is pretty exposed, so this one would be best during cooler weather. There is a $5 parking fee unless you have a season pass or a Senior Pass. Wednesdays are free parking.
Granite Basin Cayuse Trailhead: 346-347-348-351 Loop (video) This is a nice 2 3/4 mile loop hike in the Granite Basin Recreation Area. Easy hike with the first half fairly open and the second half shaded. A little elevation gain, but not much. There is a $5 parking fee unless you have a season pass or a Senior Pass. Wednesdays are free parking.
Granite Basin Lake Trailhead: 345-352-348-351-345 Short Loop (video)  This is a wonderful 3 mile loop hike of moderate difficulty. There is some elevation gain as you pull up the Connector trail, but just take it slow and enjoy! There is a $5 parking fee unless you have a season pass or a Senior Pass. Wednesdays are free parking.

White Spar Trailhead
White Spar Trailhead: 67-81-396 Loop (video)  Easy 2 mile loop. A little elevation gain but not too much. Mostly shaded. No fee for parking.
White Spar Trailhead: 396 Out and Back (video)  Easy 3 mile out and back hike to a beautiful little forest pool. A little elevation gain but not too much. Mostly shaded. No fee for parking.

White Rock Trailhead
White Rock Trailhead: 324-318 Loop (video) This is a very pretty hike in the tall pines. At 1 1/2 miles with very little elevation gain it is relaxing and enjoyable. No parking fee.

2/12/15 Two Waterfalls
While out hiking this afternoon I came upon two little waterfalls in a beautiful stream. They sounded quite different so I started to wonder why. What makes the difference? Have a look at the video below and tell me what you think. Even if I don't solve all of Nature's mysteries I just love being out there!

Sierra Adventure 2013
This was an excellent solo hike from South Lake to Le Conte Canyon and back. Four years ago I had open heart surgery and didn't know if I could still do the big hikes in the Sierras. How do you find out? - - - Take a hike!

The Life of a Century Plant
These are pictures of a century plant close to one of my favorite hiking trails at Thumb Butte Park here in Prescott, AZ. Over a period of nine months it went from Red And Hot Blooded to Down And Out. But notice in the last picture the new ones there to take his place! It's interesting to compare this set of pictures to "The Life of a Tree" below.

Mushrooms
Arizona is known as an arid, desert state but here in Prescott we are in the "Central Highlands." We have forest of Ponderosa pine and many beautiful mushrooms. Here are a few I have photographed on some of my hikes.
